How to use tire changer tools

In tire repair work, tire changer tools are a very practical combination of professional tools that can efficiently complete tire removal and installation tasks. The following introduces its composition and usage methods:

Tire changer tools composition

1.Large rake:

The large rake is the core tool of the seven-piece set. It is usually made of solid steel and is in the shape of a long rod. One end is designed as a flat pry head with a certain arc, which can be easily inserted into the gap between the tire and the wheel hub. Its length is generally 60-100 cm. The length and pry head design can provide sufficient leverage to facilitate prying large tires. It is indispensable for tire removal of trucks and buses.

2.Tire hook:

The tire hook is similar in shape to a hook, with a curved hook structure at one end and a handle for easy grip at the other end. When installing a tire, it can hook the edge of the tire and cooperate with other tools to accurately fit the tire into the wheel hub to ensure the accurate installation position.

3.Impact rod:

The impact rod is generally in the shape of a long rod, and the material is mostly high-hardness alloy steel. One end is sharper. When removing the tire, use a sledgehammer to hit the other end of the impact rod to separate the tire from the wheel hub. This is especially suitable for situations where the tire and wheel hub are tightly adhered.

4.Bead extractor:

There are different types of bead extractors. The most common one is a flat opening at one end, which can be inserted under the tire bead to pry the bead out of the tire groove. Its size and shape are designed according to different tire specifications to ensure that it can adapt to the removal of various types of tire bead.

5.Crowbar (2 pieces):

Crowbars are commonly used auxiliary tools, usually made of high-strength steel such as chrome vanadium steel. One end is a flat pry head and the other end is a hand grip. During the removal and installation of tires, it can be used to pry the edge of the tire, assist in separating the tire from the wheel hub, or provide precise prying force for minor adjustments.

6.Clamp:

Clamps are generally made of strong materials such as cast steel and are used to fix the tire position. When removing the tire, clamp the clamp between the tire and the wheel hub to prevent the tire from rolling freely during the prying process, ensuring safe and stable operation.

Usage steps

Removing tires

  1. Preparation: Park the vehicle in a flat and safe place, pull the handbrake, and shift the gear to parking gear (manual gear shift to 1st gear or reverse gear). Place a triangular warning sign around the tire to warn passing vehicles.
  2. Preliminary separation: Use a crowbar to pry at a certain distance at the gap between the tire and the edge of the wheel hub to initially separate the tire from the wheel hub. For large tires, you can first use a large rake to pry along the circumference of the tire to increase the separation range.
  3. Remove the bead: If the tire has a bead, insert the flat open end of the bead extractor under the bead, pry slowly, and remove the bead from the tire groove.
  4. In-depth separation: Insert the pry head of the large rake deep between the tire and the wheel hub, and pry using the lever principle. If the tire is tightly adhered to the wheel hub, aim the sharp end of the impact rod at the adhesion part, and hit the other end of the impact rod with a sledgehammer to separate it through impact force. When prying, you can use a clamp to fix the tire to prevent it from rolling.
  5. Complete disassembly: After the tire is mostly separated from the wheel hub, grab the tire with both hands and slowly remove the tire along the edge of the wheel hub.

Installing the tire

  1. Cleaning and preparation: Clean the surface of the wheel hub, remove debris, rust, etc., and ensure that the tire is installed and fits. Apply an appropriate amount of tire lubricant on the edge of the wheel hub to facilitate tire installation.
  2. Initial installation: Align the center of the tire with the center of the wheel hub, and slowly put the tire on the wheel hub. At this time, you can use the tire hook to hook the edge of the tire to assist in adjusting the position of the tire so that the tire and the wheel hub are initially aligned.
  3. Adjustment and fitting: Use a crowbar to pry on the edge of the tire so that the tire gradually fits the wheel hub. Pay attention to the position of the tire valve during the process to ensure correct installation.
  4. Final installation: After the tire is basically installed in place, use a large rake to gently pry along the circumference of the tire so that the tire and the wheel hub are completely fitted to ensure that the tire is firmly installed.

Precautions for use

  1. Safety first: Wear protective equipment such as protective gloves and goggles during operation to prevent tools from slipping or parts from splashing and causing injuries. When using a sledgehammer to hit the impact rod, make sure there is no one around to avoid accidents.
  2. Tool adaptation: Choose the right tools according to the tire specifications, such as the size of the rake, bead extractor, etc. should match the tire, otherwise it will affect the operation effect and even damage the tools and tires.
  3. Use force properly: When prying the tire, pay attention to the direction and strength of the force to avoid excessive force to damage the tire or wheel hub. If you encounter resistance, do not pry it forcibly, check the cause before operating.
  4. Regular maintenance: Clean the tools after use to remove oil stains, debris, etc. Regularly check whether the tools are damaged or deformed, such as the bending of the crowbar and the wear of the rake head, and repair or replace them in time to ensure the performance and safety of the tools.

Mastering the use of tire changer tools can make you more efficient and safe in tire repair work. However, if you are still unsure about the operation, it is recommended to practice on waste tires first, and then use them for actual repairs after becoming proficient.
